When RMI Technology set out to build a mobile intervention platform for students with dyslexia, the hard part wasn't the reading curriculum — it was building software rigorous enough for special-education teams to trust with real IEP goals, and simple enough for a seven-year-old to use independently. CypressBit designed and built that platform: Letter Order.

The Challenge

Dyslexia intervention is a structured, goal-driven discipline. Special-education teachers and reading interventionists work from individualized goals — each with its own status, attendance record, and measurable progress — not a generic course curriculum. RMI Technology needed a platform that could support that clinical rigor across a multi-tenant network of schools and providers, on a mobile app that students would actually use for phonics and reading-aloud practice, in both English and Spanish.

What We Built

CypressBit built Letter Order as a Django backend (on our SMBS platform) paired with a native Flutter mobile app for iOS and Android, architected around a few hard requirements that off-the-shelf ed-tech tools don't handle well:

Individualized goal tracking

Every student works against a set of structured goals with their own type, status, and attendance record. Interventionists log progress achieved per session through dedicated goal cards and progress modals — the same workflow special-education teams already use for IEP documentation, just digitized and synced in real time.

Reading-aloud tools, not just video

Because dyslexia intervention depends on hearing and producing sounds correctly, the app integrates text-to-speech playback alongside in-app audio recording and waveform playback, so a student can record themselves reading a passage and a teacher can review pronunciation asynchronously. Phonics and sight-word practice run through a flashcard subsystem built specifically for repetition-based learning.

Bilingual by design

The entire interface ships in English and Spanish from a shared localization layer, not a bolted-on translation — a requirement RMI's family base made non-negotiable.

Scheduling, messaging, and progress visibility

  • Calendar-based session scheduling for intervention appointments.
  • Real-time messaging between teachers, students, and parents over WebSockets.
  • Progress charts that turn raw goal-completion data into something a parent can actually read at a glance.
  • Push notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging) so no session or goal update gets missed.

The Result

Letter Order shipped as a production multi-tenant platform supporting bilingual, accessibility-aligned intervention workflows for special-education providers, live from 2023 through 2025 at letterorder.com. It's a representative example of the kind of software CypressBit specializes in: domain-specific, clinically structured, and built to hold up under the scrutiny of the professionals who depend on it every day.

Because the backend was built on our own SMBS platform, RMI Technology also got a content management system, blog, and contact/forms infrastructure for free — the same reusable foundation that powers this website and several other CypressBit client platforms, rather than a one-off codebase built and billed from zero.
